The Mary Vinson Memorial Library Annex project involved the adaptive reuse of the historic former Fowler Motors building to become a new activity, meeting, and office space for the Mary Vinson Memorial Library as well as providing “incubator” office and workspace for the City of Milledgeville to use in attracting new entrepreneurial ventures to the area.
We removed the entirety of the interior of the building to make room for an open and expansive annex for the library to house the overflow of patrons of the library. The restoration includes a tiered reading wall, an open space for classes or groups and a vending area all housed in the rear of the building with a separate entrance. The remaining part of the building houses the Purchasing Office and storage for the City of Milledgeville along with the “incubator” space.
This project garnered the Library the 2021 Michael L. Starr Award for Preservation:
This award was created in 2020 in memory of Mike Starr, former Board Chair of the Georgia Trust and the Georgia Cities Foundation. This award honors the rehabilitation of a downtown historic building which best exemplifies the highest standards of historic rehabilitation and has a significant impact on the downtown of the city in which it is located.
